Role of a Teaching Assistant

Teaching assistants are often used to take small groups of children who need extra support in an area, such as literacy or numeracy, out of a class. This can also include working with children who have special educational needs (SEN) that the teacher cannot always accommodate in a mainstream class. Teaching assistants can also be present in main lessons to assist students who require additional support.

As a teaching assistant you may also help teachers prepare for lessons by preparing resources, or putting out equipment at the start of a lesson. Teaching assistants are not qualified teachers, and so are led and guided by teachers.

Duties may include:

  • Helping the children with tasks such as reading or writing.

  • Providing additional support to children with special needs or international language students.

  • Helping the teacher prepare for lessons e.g. setting up the classrooms.

  • Encourage and support the children.

  • Assist the teacher with marking and correcting the children’s work.

  • Help organise school trips and activities.

  • Attending teacher meetings and reviews.
